About Andy Steensma Insurance Agency

The Andy Steensma Insurance Agency was founded in 1978 with the objective of providing the educational community of West Michigan with excellent rates and superior service. Andy and his wife Phyllis started the agency while he was teaching full-time. As the business grew, their son Keith partnered with them in 1988 and Andy left the teaching profession in 1995. While we are primarily a Meemic Insurance Agency, we also work with several other leading insurance companies.

We have enjoyed substantial growth over the past years. We currently have seven licensed agents and one customer service representative who, combined, have over 80 years of insurance experience. These agents are exceptionally qualified and ready to answer your questions and assist you with all your insurance needs.At Meemic Insurance Company and the Andy Steensma Agency, we specialize in insurance designed for the educational community, including Grand Valley State University employees.

Agency Principal
Andy Steensma
Agency Principal
Andy is a graduate of Calvin College and has a Master of Arts degree in mathematics from Central Michigan University. He is licensed in property and casualty insurance, as well as life and health. He was teaching in the Grand Rapids Christian Schools when he founded the agency in 1978. In 1995, he left the teaching profession to devote himself full-time to the insurance agency. Although he still enjoys keeping an active role in the day-to-day activities of the office, he also enjoys taking time away to spend with his grandchildren. And, when he is not spending time with his grandkids, he likes to play softball, often playing several times a week.
Keith
Keith is Andy’s son, so he grew up with the insurance business. As a child, he was given the job of filing and taking messages at his father’s office, which was in the basement of their home at the time. He attended Calvin College and received a degree in business administration. He officially started working full-time in the office in June 1989 and obtained his license in property, casualty, life and health shortly after. He is now the office manager, where he enjoys working with the clients and our great staff. He enjoys time away from the office by golfing, playing tennis and working on his “fixer-upper” house, which is not so much a joy as a necessity.
Nylene
Nylene attended Northwestern College in Iowa and later moved to Grand Rapids in 1969. She started as a customer service representative for the Steensma Agency in October 1996, when the business was still conducted out of Andy’s basement. Now, Nylene is a licensed agent in property and casualty and greatly appreciates our building, especially the windows! Her hobbies include playing Scrabble, cross-stitching and baking. But she does like to break loose every once in awhile, like when she went white-water rafting down the Arkansas River in Colorado with her husband and son.
Trisha
Trisha has an extensive insurance background. She worked for other independent agents before June 2002, when she began working at the Steensma Agency as a licensed property and casualty agent. Trisha is now a licensed agent in property, casualty, life, accident and health and works with all the companies our agency offers. When she isn’t growing her knowledge of insurance, she enjoys cooking, reading and playing with her two beautiful children. She is a huge fan of the Detroit Lions. She continues to believe every year will be the year they will go to the Super Bowl. GO, LIONS!
Sherrie
Sherrie began her insurance career in 1998 at Foremost Ins. Co., where she started in their personal insurance department selling to contracted groups. She then moved into the sales department of their specialty products division. Since 2002, she has been with both a large national account independent agency and a small-town independent agency. Sherrie completed her CISR (Certified Insurance Service Representative) designation in 2004. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her three grown children, and Celtic music and dancing.
Shawn
A licensed agent in property and casualty, Shawn put her career on the back-burner when her daughter arrived in 2005. After seven years working nights as a server at Macaroni Grill, she decided it was time to get back into insurance. She joined the Steensma team in October 2012 and quickly got back in the game. In her spare time, she is very involved in the Kentwood Schools that her daughter attends. Besides helping at school, she enjoys hanging out at her pool, reading, spending time with her nieces, camping and, most of all, hanging out with her family!
Betsy
Betsy is a graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and business. During her college years, she worked at Greenfield Village as a tour guide and glass blower. Her insurance career began in 2001 at The Michael Culp Agency-State Farm where she obtained her license in property, casualty, and life and health. She worked for Foremost Insurance for 13 years as a sales and service representative for all personal lines and as an underwriter for dwelling fire and manufactured home. She has been a part of the Steensma Agency team since September 2019. In her spare time, she loves spending time with her husband and two children. She is an avid Spartan fan and spent her final college year as a member of the Michigan State Spartan Marching Band. GO GREEN!
Christina
Christina previously worked at Foremost Insurance for three years, where she was a licensed agent in property and casualty, specializing in writing policies for travel trailers and mobile homes. She came to the Steensma Agency in August 2004. She quickly progressed and is an expert in property and casualty for the many companies our agency offers. She may work at a desk during the day, but she is very active in her spare time. She enjoys Tae Bo, horseback riding and the very intense sport of shopping. Christina may have graduated right down the road at Jenison High School, but she has been all over the world.
